The Farewell Assembly took place on the 2nd October 2009. The fun didn't stop there. What you guys didn't see was the rehearsals, the bloopers the students and teachers made during the video presentation and the post show interview.

Ignite! Music Festival 2009

Totally unrelated to Westwood but here it is.

For those of you guys who are into gigs and concerts but have NO money to buy tickets because they cost so much. Well, here's a free one for you!

"IGNITE! 2009 – a Republic Polytechnic (RP) annual, student‐driven music festival that will be
happening in the month of July! IGNITE! has always been about free & good music in a great
setting. IGNITE! 2009 retains all that and add on doing all that we love for a good cause. For the
first time, IGNITE! and Service‐Learning (S‐L) come together to raise awareness for S‐L amongst
our youths, and to show them what people their age have done, and are capable of, to make
this world a better place. IGNITE! 2009 is all about Passion and Compassion.

There will be a series of mini concerts by a wonderful collection of bands playing to you a wide
mix of music genres, both covers and originals! These bite‐sized concerts will then culminate in
the final 2 nights of visual and aural treat on the lawn, where the festival will come to a close
with a big bang, where you can enjoy free admission concert event with fringe carnival booths
on the perimeters.

The carnival booths will feature some of RP’s best Student S‐L projects, some F&B, band CDs
and merchandise, autograph sessions and photo opportunities with your favourite bands, and
freebies from sponsors! Of course, let’s not forget the spectacular, state‐of‐the‐art audio visual
experience that will blow your minds.

Alright guys, some of the videos are blocked by Youtube due to music copyright reasons. The reason why it's block is because Music companies don't like people using their artist music on videos. They only allow their own artist to use it.

So I migrating the Sec One Orientation 2009, Sports Day 2009 and Cross Country 2009 videos to Vimeo. Videos that are just coverage, like the POP and the upcoming NDP, would be uploaded to Youtube because they don't have any music in them.

The Sports Day 2009 took place on 11 Feb @ the Jurong West Sports Complex. It was an adrenaline pumping day with a 10x200m Relay across all levels. A musical chair segment was also played between the students and teachers! To end it all off, the teachers had a relay of their own! Everyone cheered their hearts out to support their own class. Some dressed in their house t-shirt while others showed off their own customised class t-shirts!

Westwood held their annual CNY Celebrations with a Lion Dance performance by our very own Ex-Students! The day was filled with competitions such as Blow Painting and Build-you-own Firecracker competition.

Chinese New Year Celebration!

Marion here, The new girl from class 1C. Hello. (: I will be also contributing to this blog from today onwards. So maybe you'll seeing more posts of mine. I hope more Westwoodians will come and join us :D.

Happy (late) Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year is going to be over soon so... Hoped you have collected lots of money from your relatives and parents! We had a Chinese New Year celebration in Westwood Secondary on the 6 February and it's... Not bad.

I guess the whole school had to decorate their classrooms and I must say the class near the keyboard lab(4A?) decorated it very nicely. I like the purple ribbon near the door. Our mother tongue teacher told us we could decorate according to any season we want, But most classes decided to stick on the Chinese new year theme(including our class, Who sticked the couplets wrongly. But it's okay now.) except for class 1H, Who did the "Christmas" theme.

Every class decorated it nicely. Keep up the good work people!

After that we went to the hall to watch the performance. The Guzheng girls performed first and I must say it's quite good. The emcees was nicely dressed but the "Hey, You cheater, You're still using cue cards!" thing was quite fake.

And some students went up to the stage to dress up their friends according to the theme of "god of fortune". It's quite fun to watch them dress up their friends with pink and red paper, Hats and other things they find it the box.

After that the non-chinese teachers sang chinese new year songs, And there was this male teacher who kept saying the last word of each phrase. Very funny :D. I cannot really hear the other teachers though :\

Followed by Pamalo eating contest, By the sec4&5. I don't like Pamalos. Ack. And there was this boy who put the peeled Pamalo skin on his head, And he was dancing around or something like that.

After that they had prize giving presentation, And all the sec 1s are like, "WOOOOOOI!" for very long when the emcee said that the class decoration results will be out the next week, Which is this week :D. But after we came back from the holidays, Most of the red packets drop of from the walls ): And we did touch-up and it's okay now(:

We're coming to the end of the month of June, how has school been for all of you?
Three major updates from Westwood Blog!
Definitely deserved to grab all Westwoodians' attention, so read on!

Firstly, the upcoming month's a very special month. If you are still guessing, it's National Day. And every year in Westwood Secondary, we would have the annual Cultural Expressions! For your information, Cultural Expressions is an event where we commemorate our nation's birthday and also to showcase our student population's poise and elegance, by performing folkdances from different countries. It's a day to celebrate and have fun, whether you're moving to the music or watching it by the sidelines, it would definitely be high atmosphere to the max!
Cultural Expressions would be held on the 8th August 2007.

Secondly, changes have been made to the team of blogger in Westwood blog! Our team of bloggers are as follows: 3x, Abdul Siddiq, Kayelmen and Ladyboss!
(Plus some never-expected-them-to-be-here-and-reading-this-blog people, guess who?) They are none other than, Westwood Secondary's teachers and staff! I know, some are dying to know who are they, but obviously, we will not reveal their identity. However, all you might have to do is to stay tuned to this blog, and perhaps, just perhaps... on one fine day, their kept-in-the-dark identities might be disclosed! :D

Snd Review on Class 1H(2004)

Holidays are soon coming to an end, hope you guys enjoyed yourselves and did your holiday assignments! :D

It has been quite a time since this blog has been updated, and now, i am here under a mission to do a short review of our old Stand and Deliver videos, and Jeremy has dug out the lucky, 1Honour of 2004 to be first! For the benefit of the young birds in Westwood, Stand and Deliver used to be one of our Westwood morning programmes taking place on Wednesday mornings. It helps to build creativity, confidence and helps with class bonds too! Stand and deliver is practically a stage where Westwoodians are given a ticket to shine glamourously for their class and showcase their unique talents of acting and communicating. Skits are being put up, injecting humour and our school's moral values, like adaptability, care, concern and compassion.
Sounds fun, doesn't it?

Back to the video review of class 1Honour's, their video holds on to a sense on adaptability and with a little creativity, this skit became a great morning-perk-up for Westwoodians.
People who would have wished for things to go back, to rewind. In this skit, they made use of the technique in a video camera, playback! Hah, very very entertaining. I guess the review shall stop here! Do take a look at 1Honour's Stand and Deliver video, do it with your own eyes.

Westwood Concert Band - Guest Post by Kin Wah

Westwood Concert Band

"Oh my! We are dead. 4th day! Judges are sure sleeping." This is the reaction of the band members when they received the SYF date of our judging. Indeed, we, Westwood Concert Band, was scheduled to compete on the 4th day of a 6-days Central Judging Of Concert Bands. Nevertheless, the band had put up a great performance on the stage of Singapore Conference Hall.

The set-piece was Sunrise and Safari, composed by Adam Gorb. It was divided into 2 movements: The first, Singapore Sunrise, is suitable for school bands, and is based on the Singaporean melody 'Ikan Kekek'. It's characterised by a mysterious opening with early-morning birdcalls on woodwinds before the melody takes over and rises to a climax. Night Safari is intended for slightly more advanced bands and is a depiction of Singapore's world famous Safari Park that can be visited only in the dark. The piece is a sort of jazz waltz, but with a lot of surprising sounds. All bands can choose either movement. The band, together with its director, Mr Patrick Wong, has chose to play the 2nd movement, Night Safari.

The choice-piece chosen was "The Merry Widow" (Selections For Wind Esemble). It was composed by Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár in 1900, arranged by Eiji Suzuki. This piece was an overplayed song by local bands, which can be reflected by 5 others schools playing it for their SYF too. It was based on the operetta, the Merry Widow. The story is about the rich widow, Hanna Glawari, attempting to find a husband, Danilo. This piece has a cheerful and light beginning, followed by a march. Next was a build-up suspense and finally released by a waltz. Following that was a fanfare and a clarinet solo. The piece then moves on to the 2nd part, where Hanna had a misunderstanding with Danilo. It was continued by the song "Vilja". The piece then enter a mallets solo, added by the flutes then finally whole band play. This choral part ended with a mallets solo, with the winds holding onto a chord. Finally, the piece moves into the 3rd and last part of the story. It was a happy occasion and the piece ended with a lively and cheerful mood.

Due to the concert-cum-exchange trip in December 2006, the band has limited time to prepare for SYF as we only received the scores slightly before school reopens in 2007. Hence, the band decided to have practices from Monday to Saturday. Members have to set aside time on non-practices day in order for us to learn both pieces. We made our director angry occasionally as we did not do certain aspect of both piece well. Once he wanted to change the set piece 3 weeks before the competition. But the band didn't give up.

Finally, it was 12 April. The band has its final rehearsal in the morning and went off for the competition. The band received the support of the school. This adds on to the stress we have as we are the 1st aesthetic group going for SYF. However, this stress doesn't affect our performance on the stage and in fact, made us to play even better than our rehearsals.

The band then went back to the conference hall for the results. Although the standard of the competition has been brought up by a level, the band still managed to achieve a silver award. The members were practically jumping for joy. Some of them even cried. The band end off the joyous day with a "mass hugging" session with our dearest father, mr wong.

Although we didn't achieve the target of a Gold this time, we really want to thank Mdm Hidayah and Mdm Azlina for their support, the encouragement for the school, the motivating words for Mrs Chow and the teachers, support from Coral Secondary and also our ever loving father, Mr Patrick Wong. The band would like to say that without mr wong, we will not be able to achieve today's results

"If you think you can do it, you can do it." That was the sentence by our instructor which made us preserve on despite all the obstacles we faced.

Go Band, you will achieve the result you want IF only you put in effort. We are just a little bit more to Gold. With continued hardwork, you will be rewarded for it. The seniors will be supporting you both mentally and physically.

Westwood Chorus: SYF 2007

The last choir of the first day of Singapore Youth Festival. It isn't very easy for Westwood Chorus as the pieces they had were famous pieces that goes around the 7 judges' ears.

The set-piece, Everyone Sang, was by Ko Matsushita, one of the judges present then. The touching lyrics was a poem by Siegfield Sassoon (1886-1967), a World War I service soldier. The poem speaks of a deeper, underlying reality - the closing lines bring that into focus. It is about the end of War, and how he had seen France, then.

'Lay A Garland', a madrigal for eight voices singing about a lady who has passed on because 'her love was false', however '...she died true'. Sad and calm piece, but another well-known song, putting up an aim for Westwood Chorus to hit.

The next piece and last piece, 'Pokpok Alimpako', this piece is based on a motif of a maranao (southern philippines) melody and the words of a muslim children's chant; it features virtuostic interlocking rhythmic patterns and a prestissimo tempo.

Westwood Chorus has come a very long way to come face to face with SYF2007. Unlike 2005, members would have always formed a different set of feelings, quality of sound and bond within them. It is never easy for the choir members to get the right feel and the right times.
But all efforts of hardwork has been payed off. Being th last choir of the day, it felt way tense than usual. What was worse? The unveiling process of the results.
Some Secondary fours went back up to receive results, while the rest waited for the news.

And yes! Though we didn't achieve our aim, for gold, for this year, maintaining it was great news. We'd love to thank Miss Fong and Miss Chen. And most importantly, our conductor, Mr Wilson Goh. Doing the seniors, teachers, our conductor and the school proud. Do not give up on anything right now, because this is only the start of your very great musical journey in Westwood.

Awards Day 2007- How a graduate sees it

It was just yet another Awards Day. But this time, it's different for me. It was from the perspective of a graduate. Screened in the hall was the CCA Passing Out Parade. It came with the usual glamour and what not, fit for a parade as the name suggests. There was also the Student Council Investiture. It showcased the EXCO committee for that year and the new
student counsellors that were stepping up. Many new faces waiting for their leadership skills to brought to be an all new level. I bet being a student counsellor would be tough with all the meetings and administrative work. I myself had never been a student counsellor and never wanted to. It's just way too stressful. But i respect the people who take up these roles as
student counsellors as they could possibly compromise their academic studies and their social life. With great power comes great responsibility. However, there is often a debate regarding the selection of these student counsellors from the view of an average student. Who should get selected and who should not. Some student counsellors are "forced" into the student
council unwillingly. With that, i am referring to my own classmates. I wonder how's it like now. On the other hand, there are some people who have yet to hit the standard they should behave yet they are given the clout. Look at it from the positive side. Maybe it's just to give them a chance to behave even better and to give them a chance. Isn't that great? Just some
food for thought. Despite that, the school still managed to run smoothly with some stumbling here and there. But what's learning without mistakes, right?

There was the NYAA Awards Ceremony. Many students from Westwood had received this prestigious award. It was made compulsory for all students to take the Bronze Award starting from the cohort of Secondary 2's in the year. It is indeed something that we should celebrate. Each year, the class would send a representative to the event to collect the award on behalf of the class. It is quite a pity that not every single person can enjoy the glamour
of receiving the award from a Minister. But, there is still a certain element of glamour in receiving it during the Awards Day. For all these, we should thank Mr Neo Beng Seng, the Coordinator for NYAA for his hard work and dedication. Back at the graduates' seats, the seniors were talking about the juniors. Hehe. Ever wondered what your seniors thought about you? Haha. Some food for thought.

An Awards day without celebrating the Academic success of the pupils would not be called an Awards Day. The top few students of each cohort received their awards in recognition of their academic success. Three cheers for these people! There was a Valedictorian speech by Kian Boon as you all know him, the Scrabble King. It was indeed an interesting speech to listen to. The juniors out there must be thinking it's boring though. It only makes meaning
to you if you experienced what the Valedictorian himself was talking about which i experienced first hand. I shall let all of you in on a secret. The Valedictorian hit me before he went up onto the stage because he was too nervous. Hohoho...Can you imagine that? Kian Boon being nervous? Heh. I bet you've never seen that side of him. Behind the scenes before and after the
Secondary 4's took their award were the photograph taking sessions. Gotta thank Ms Joy Chen, our photographer for that. I shall send these photos to Jeremy when i get hold of these for all you people to look at. Your turn would come soon though.

After the Awards Day, the graduands were dismissed together with the teachers while the rest of the students were asked to stay back. I was down at the Cafeteria at the VIP table with the Principal,Vice Principal, Guest of Honour and a few other people. It was indeed an interesting experience. There was some talk about the school and some future plans. The juniors back
in the hall were probably given a good earful and a piece of the Discipline Committee's mind. I can understand that pain that they go through. It happens often after formal events. There are exceptions where the school would be praised and released early though instead of being kept back. I gotta say, you guys need to work harder on your performance for events like
this!

Ever imagined having a casual dinner with a group of teachers? Haha. I experienced that. I have had quite a few lunches and dinners with my teachers before but the one on the Awards Day was slightly different though. Marcus,Kian Boon,myself,De xian,Jia Jun and Chee lup invited the teachers for dinner at Pizza Hut.I think some Westwoodians saw us and the teachers
decided to get a table inside in order to prevent being harassed and have a good dinner. Ha! De xian,Jia Jun and Chee lup didn't turn up though. Do any of these names sound familiar to you? The teachers that turned up were Miss Gay, Mrs Melissa Tan, Ms Joy Chen, Ms Lim Chiau Li and Ms Sim(Also known as Mrs thio but i prefer calling her Ms Sim).We had dinner and some gossip talk about teachers and also students there. When you are in secondary 4, usually
you would get to hear a lot of rumours about both teachers and students if you have a close relationship with your teachers. It was the case for me, at least. Never imagined the gossips the teacher would talk about huh? Haha... i tell you, it's interesting.

For those of you who don't know me, don't worry if you are a secondary 4. Some of the seniors including myself would be coming back to tutor the graduating classes in Additional Mathematics and Chemistry by the request of our Westwood teachers. We could possibly be starting a Debating Society in Westwood too! I have spoken to Mr Johnny Ang. He said he has plans to make Language a niche area in Westwood. Good news for all of us? Heh. Another
achievement to come in time. Till then!

I've managed to upload Westwood Secondary School's - Official School Opening! It was held on 12 Nov 2002 with guests from MOE & Dr Amy Khor. Performances were put up by our students. Starting with the Westwood Chours alongside the Westwood Staff singing Many Dreams, One Aspiration. Folkdance by the Sec2s & 3s. A STOMP inspired skit by 2H & the Sec1s showcasing our RevUp.

The Finale item shows all of the performers coming together to perform a Light Show while singing the song "Reach" by Gloria Estefan.

Westwood Concert Band - Guest Post by Winnie Chong

Date: 12th April 2007

The bi-annual Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Concert Bands has finally arrived. All bands have to play a total of two songs; a set piece which is set by MOE and a choice piece which is chosen by the band director. The set piece for this year is Sunrise and Safari, a piece which is composed by internationally recognised composer, Adam Gorb. It comprises of two sections; Sunrise and Night Safari. The band director, Mr Patrick Wong, has chose to play Night Safari. The choice piece which the band has selected is The Merry Widow Selections.

The band members have put in a lot of hardwork in the midst of preparing for this competition. On top of the usual thrice a week band practices, band members have also took time off their hectic schedule to organise their own sectional practices.

The band has been scheduled to compete on the fourth day of the seven days long competition. Results have shown that the standards of this year's competition has been brought forth to a much higher standard. This has definitely increased the anxiety of the band director and members.

Nevertheless, the band members' hardwork has not been put off. They've clinched the third consecutive Silver medal for Westwood!

The hall roared with applause and cheers from the band members, band director, seniors, teacher in charge(s), Principal, and not forgetting, supporters from Coral Concert Band.

Band, you've done Mr. Wong, the seniors, teachers, Principal, school and everyone really proud! Juniors, please carry on working hard and not let your seniors' hardwork go to waste.

Annual Four-In-One Major Event!

28th March 2007, Wednesday.

Early morning, gathered Westwoodians to celebrate the major event then. Being able to witness, not one but four events, on that day. Namely: CCA Passing Out Parade, Student Council Investuiture, NYAA as well as the Academics Awards Ceremony. After breakfast, students were dismissed and hence, starting the first event of the day. Our Guest-Of-Honour, Ms Suzanna.

CCA Passing Out Parade.
A day to commemorate the hardwork and efforts put in by the Secondary4 leaders, and also to pass down the leadership positions to the future Sec3 leaders of the CCAs. All the sports, clubs, uniformed groups, performing arts were all present, in the quadrangle getting ready for the event to kick start. Dressed up in their full-uniforms and costumes, each CCA shows what they are representing and stands proud for they are watched upon.

Student Council Investiture.
The current Sec4s must have had a great time serving th school with pride and honour, now it's time to step down and let the Sec3s to take over. For your information, Johnathan Aphonsus, the new Council President is taking over the Ex-President, Crystal Tilini. All the best for the leading batch of councillors as they take on their responsibilities as role models in Westwood Secondary School, strive on SCs!
NYAA Awards Ceremony.
The cohort of Sec3s(2007) received their Bronze Award. While 66 Sec4s(2007) received their Silver Award. These 66 students went on for this award totally on their on accord, yes! Voluntarily, and hence setting a nice atmosphere in this event!

Academics Awards Ceremony.
Yes! The day to reward the diligent pupils of Westwood Secondary. We see the consistant number ones and tops in languages, maths and sciences. Also, a push to the rest of the students to work hard and aim for the highest in life(:

Chingay: Parade Of Dreams

Touted as ASIA'S GRANDEST STREET & FLOAT PARADE...

...and Westwood Sec was part of the event!

Yes! You heard it right. As part of the NYAA, the Sec2s and several Sec3s were part of the HIP-HOP act for Chingay. They had to learn a Hip-Hop routine for the act.

Chingay was held over a course of 2 days. 23 Feb (Friday) being the preview and 24 Feb (Saturday) being the actual LIVE TELECAST event. Westwood was located at ZONE 4 where the First Float - along with EMCEES Gurmit Singh & Quan Yifeng, Mr President himself - Mr SR Nathan and other ministers - was proceeding to ZONE 1 to start off the show.

Westwood was super enthusiastic. Westwoodians joined in the fun, sang along cheered for the live band and hiphop acts there and even started the Kallang Wave! Spirit of the Westwoodians.

Time passed, Floats passed - Westwood was still rocking the hou...for that matter, ORCHARD ROAD! 3rd Last Float, TIME FOR WESTWOOD to show off their moves! They got up dance flawlessly to the music!

Chinese New Year, Cross Country

15 Feb - Day after VDay.

The school celebrated Chinese New Year. As always, it starts with a bang. With Lion Dance Performances.

16 Feb - Cross Country

This year's Cross Country takes place at the Japanese Garden. Everyone was gearing up for the run. Uneven terrain and a downpour the previous day made the route a seemed like it'd never end.

So the run started with the Lower Sec Boys. Warm up, and they're off! Running the full course unlike the girls. Soon after, it was the Lower Sec Girls but they're running at a shorter course. Like the Lower Secs, the Upper Sec Boys ran the full course & Girls, shorter.

This year's Cross Country sees the underdogs, Cedar taking home the coveted House Trophy, knocking the defending Champ, Willow off.

Will Cedar stay as the Champion House for Sports Day as well? Or will the other Houses take home the coveted Prize? Stay tuned for Sports Day...

Secondary One Orientation 2007 - Guest Post By Tan Jian Yang

Westwood secondary school. Orientation night 2007

The day was 3rd of January, even before the camp started me and Jaclyn is
that excited that we have already starting to think of many names for our
own respective class, of course, the name is not logical and pretty dumb.

The day started with the secondary ones sitting together with the seniors of
the school, after the assembly, the secondary one move up to the hall for a
talk by the Principal, Mrs. Betty Chow, A talk of discipline by Miss Laura
Lau, Pastrol care by Mrs. Verges and last of all Mr. Ramesh who will be
giving the CCA talk for them.

Throughout the talk, class facilitator and the SL/SC involve in the camp was
gathering at the front of the hall, receiving briefing, halfway through
that, some SL / SC was called down to help the teacher in giving out the
handbook contents, by the time we have finish giving out the handbook
content, the SL/SC who helped has left a small amount of time to rest before
meeting our respective class.

The first thing we did (in my case) was ice breaker game, we have polar
bear, it was a bit of a difficult time for the facilitator because for some
reason, they just don't mix =) and just getting them stepping into their new
class is hard as well, why? I don't know, probably because they was very
shy, stuff went on as smoothly, the day was short, it ended at 1pm or around
there and they are released.

The 2nd day, 04/01 the secondary ones is going to have their first camp in
Westwood secondary school, It started off with the usual morning ritual and
we are off to meet our class! Okay not really, they will be having game
station! It seems fun for the secondary ones, as for me I felt kind of
frustrated cause most of the secondary ones misunderstood my instruction,
but never mind! They will learn to someday! After their respective games
they have their principal talk, while for the SL, that means bonding with
each other! Well not really, some of us were receiving instruction for the
night game by our dearest chief coordinator, Mr. Fernanders kok chan sam.

After the principal talk, we have the nomination of names (my case again)
yea, lots of cranky names and many other out of your imagination name as
well, 1 carebear, anyone?

Right after this was singing for the secondary ones with Miss Pauline Fong!!
The ever so most cute and bubbly music teacher in Westwood secondary school!

Then later in the late afternoon they have a inter class competition, the
CAPTAINS BALL! Yup, as for my case again my class had fun! As well as the
girl cause they claim that taking care of wallets is fun for them.

And so they proceed on to have their dinner, a punishing dinner, they
received scolding after scolding, waves and waves of hand signal then and
only then can they start on their food cheer and start eating together!

Right after this was the night activity, the Kidnap game! Westwood secondary
was dark, still a stranger place for secondary ones but anway, before the
game start, Me and other SL/SC went on to teaching them the fun clap "every
body dance now!" its fun just to learn it the SL teaching them have a lot of
fun teaching them too! So without any more delay the game continues, it's a
game that can be summarize as "fun cause it made me scream my lung out!"
After the whole game we have the winner "1G1 AND 1G2" congratulations for
sweeping away the first and second place 1G! So as a reward, the SL decided
to treat them supper, and off they go to the cafeteria and have their
supper, a cup of milo, even though it's a cup of milo, its not as peaceful
cause they receive scolding after scolding and many hand signals, yet they
can't keep quiet but it still went on smoothly as the classes went for their
bath.

The 3rd day, the secondary ones have their singing practices with miss Fong
again =) then folk dancing! It's a tough time teaching them how to dance but
luckily we have miss Joy Chen to teach! Thanks Miss Chen again =)

after their breaks they come back to class for touching up of their class
decoration and also getting their campfire items ready! It took us the whole
day but nonetheless a meaningful one, after that the secondary ones will be
learning camp fire cheers by their beloved facilitators, then was dinner,
not as torturing as the one they had previously but I lost my voice halfway
through, teaching them the banana dance x).

And here it goes, the campfire time! Everything went on smoothly but halfway
through the rain came in and they have to settle in the hall, working very
quickly with the help of NPCC cadets we were able to arranged the chair just
in time for the teachers and parents and off we go to proceed on for their
campfire item! *claps* hooray secondary ones! You guys are already confident
communicator just being able to stand in front of everyone and delivering
your items! Don't worry if you guys feel that you are not as good, but you
still have stand and deliver! So by then show us that you guys are better
and improved!

Then come the very moment, the awards for the classes! There is many
classes! But I will like to point out this class the SEC 1A hooray for you
guys! You guys won a lot of prizes and has shown that the normal technical
in Westwood is INDEED special! The classes who didn't won any prizes do not
fear, you guys have many other competition in your coming day in Westwood
sec, So live strong and do your classes proud!

Secondary One Orientation 2007 - Guest Post By Jacklyn

The night before Day One of Orientation 2007.

Yes, i remember still. Jian Yang & I were laughing our heads off, joking about the incoming batches of secondary ones. Not about how they behave or how they look, but more of their new class names(shall not be revealed). Doesn't sound very nice, but it gets us in the mood for the orientation as we would be leading, together with a great bunch of student leaders.

Day One.
3rd January, 2007.
The new morning went off well, other than the fact that the talks took up much more time than supoosedly to, however that didnt bring the energy level of the student leaders down, they kept their enthusiasm running while receiving instructions from teachers, as well as the in-charge then. After the talks ended, class facilitators were finally able to interact with the class. Getting the new seedlings of Westwood secondary school to interact with their classmates wasn't a very easy job, mind you. As they are not used to the new environment, facilitators have to make use of their creative juices to get their classes all hyped up! It was definitely a job well done.
For the first day of orientation, it was, overall, a good job. Duties were fulfilled &i believe that the secondary ones had fun. Though i didn't get to interact with my class at all, due to overtime parent-entertaining after school tour for the parents, i got to know that they are a lively bunch of students, very independant too! It was a short day, ended really early at 1300h. It sure took the energy out of the student leaders, but that definitely didn't stop there.

Day Two.
4th January, 2007.
The usual, morning silent reading, Westwood tradition, or so to say. Off with the singing of the National Anthem(my favourite song!)&the pledge. A little gathering interaction for the student leaders with their classes & off they go for station games! I didn't really know what happened during the games, all i remembered was lazing in the council's room for a little while before heading to the school hall. hahaha, typical student slacker. anyways, the classes in the hall were having alot of fun. They were playing the game, "Caterpillar" if i am not mistaken. It was really fun, wanted to join in though, but realised that, if at any time i fall from the chair, i might just squash them under me. hahaha, alright. not very funny.

Following after the station games, it was a dialogue by our principal, Mrs Betty Chow, while the student leaders had a little bonding time. Receiving instructions by the chief co-ordinator, Fernanders Koak, for the game that would be taking place that night. Then, it was the time that Jian Yang & I, enjoyed. Name giving session for the classes! I guess, during this session, the facilitators would get to know their class a wee-bit more than before, bringing them closer together. My favourite time of that day, singing of school anthem&school cheer with Miss Fong! It was really fun, i enjoyed it a whole lot.

Then we had an inter-class competition of Captain's Ball! i believe they enjoyed themselves to the fullest, while the rest of the facilitators and i entertained ourselves by chatting the time away. Dinner time! Though it wasn't a very quiet dinner, the secondary ones had a fun time cleaning the cafeteria up! Good job, secondary ones!

They had a night walk, after dinner. However, i went home that night so i didn't catch what happened, but i did have a great time with the sec ones.

Day Three
5th January, 2007.
I only started taking over as facilitator for my class, they were doing decorations for their classes at that time. They ae a very independant class, i'm proud of them for winning the second place in class decorations! Over to the campfire programme that night, the opening ceremony was awesome, but it rained halfway throughout the programme. Kind of anti-climax though, but we had an evacuation towards the hall & thanks to the NPCC members, the stimulation of the campfire was set up quickly. Performances by the secondary ones were great, though new to the school, there were confident communicators deliverng their skits. Excellent! hahaha.
At the end of the campfire, the secondary ones must have had a great night, shouting&cheering. The student leaders had a great time, i believe. They were, too, tired.
The day ended on a good note and praises were received, commenting on the student leaders.
A job well done, student leaders!
&to the secondary ones, have fulfilling years ahead in Westwood!

What the hay, I know it's still several hours till 2007 arrives but I probably won't be posting tomorrow.

Out with 2006 and in with 2007!

2006 has been a blast for you guys. Most notable is that our SHOWTIME team got into the FINALS and came out as the RUNNER-UP and our CHEER TEAM WON!

2007 for Westwood doesn't come without intresting additions. For those followers on the tagboard, you probably would already know that Westwood is getting AIRCONS! After the Fire at the Rubbish Area, we got a new stronger one (I suppose). For the Sec 3s next year, NEW FRIENDS, ok not really but you get what I mean. NEW TEACHERS! NEW VICE-PRINCIPAL! (not adding on to that, you'll just have to find out)

I strongly encourage you guys to tag on the tagboard with your HOPES and DREAMS for 2007 or even MEMORIES you wanna share in 2006.

Members of public chip in to put out fire!

On Monday(4 December) at about 8pm, Annie, 27, heard a “loud explosion” coming from outside her block at Jurong Street 25. She rushed to the window and saw this building on the grounds of Westwood Secondary School go up in flames.Thankfully, “no one was trapped in the fire.”The SCDF received a call from the police with regards to the incident at about 8pm and despatched a fire engine and a fire truck to the scene immediately. When the SCDF arrived at the scene about ten minutes later, civic-minded members of the public had already put out the fire with fire extinguishes.The fire is believed to have started in the rubbish collection centre within the school compounds and the police are still investigating the case.

WESTWOOD WAS ON FIRE! Ok, not quite.

The rubbish area caught on fire. Charcoals from a CCA BBQ (not gonna name the CCA) was not disposed the right way and caught on fire, which melted ONE of the rubbish bins - the one that looks like a trolley. The rubbish area wasn't that black but the damage can be seen. The bin melted so badly that tiles had to be removed from the floor.

After NINE MONTHS of studying, finally you can shout and let everyone know that - SCHOOL'S OUT!

So, you've got TWO whole months of holidays. What are you gonna do? Study? Play? Slack?

As always, you've got the dreaded, HOLIDAY ASSIGNMENTS. Do those first. Finish them up fast so that you can have more time to yourself. Don't delay in doing your assignments, all the formulas and equations are still etched in your brain. Even if you forgot, you can get together in a study group and finish your assignments. Use your first couple of weeks wisely.

Once that's out of the way, you've still got 1 & 1/2 months left! Do something! Pick up something new! A sport? A hobby? In the words of Nickelodeon: Get Up! Get Out! And Go Play! Spend time with your friends. Organise chalets, BBQs or outings. Bond with your classmates. For those who MIGHT be saving up since the start of the year for something, now it's the time to go get yourself that special something! Reward yourself for a job well done in your exams!

For those couch potatoes, who should be doing the above two, I have an idea for you.

Are you an aspiring photographer ? Do you want your work to be seen ? Well dont miss this chance then. So here's the thing -

The school will be compiling photographs you have shot( whether it's Landscape,Self Potraits, Emotive,Conceptual, Fashion etc) . And the best ones will be selected and be displayed around the school campus. And i'm not talking about the ones you see in Friendster.We want good quality photos.

Submission date will be from after EYE onwards till next year before the 2007 secondary one orientation( well that was what i was being told)

All submissions are to be submitted to Ms Tan Wan Kheng in a cd/thumbdrive. And remember, all of your work has to have a theme(of your choice).

Lights, Cameras and It's Showtime! - FINALS! Part II

Hey, sorry for not updating. I was down with loads of viruses. Ok, back to the updates. As I said earlier, I was at Mediacorp. Little Genie, along with the Cheer Group, left the school at roughly 10am. We had to reach Mediacorp at 11am. Upon reaching, it was full dress straight away. Both the Little Genie and the Cheer Group when into make up so that they could have the full dress rehearsal. Yes! There are rehearsals! So it went through the night till 6.

An hour to go before everything goes LIVE! All the groups were gearing up for the performance of their lives!

So as the clock counts down, Camera's are ready, Light's are set, Audience are seated....

The show is on air, telecasted LIVE for whole of Singapore. First up was the Schools' Segment. As the Little Genie await their turn, everyone was rehearsing their lines the final time. Miss Fong & I burnt our fingers because of the Dry Ice.

We were on. The video clip played and we saw the team doing the props and stuff with Ben Yeo disturbing them. The clip ended with Mrs Chow giving the team words of encouragement! Cheer Team was up next. They had stunts! As everything was going on, video & cheers, we had a mad rush in setting up the props with the Mediacorp crew backstage. Buildings for Spiderman, River & Tree. The curtains were drawn. IT'S SHOWTIME!

Fires! Sparklers! Batman Flying! Spiderman Shooting Webs! Elastiman Stretching! Gummi Bear Farting! Woah! The judges, as always, gave us good comments & gave us the HIGHEST POINTS! 28.1! We got the highest for the Schools' Segment.

An hour passed, it was the results. CHEERTEAM WON! They earned themselves a Munchys $1000 cheque and a trophy! Little Genie got to the TOP 2 of the Schools' Segment! Moment of truth. After tons of voting, lightbulb flickering.

The lightbulb did not stop at the Little Genie. We Lost.

The group put in their outmost effort in getting so far. Bellyshaking to Kungfu Manual and now Superheroes. We are still winners. We got the highest for Judges Votes and that counts the most. We got to the FINALS and that is already no mean feat. Sadly, we did not garner enough votes from the viewers.

Reality sanked in. Most of the members broke down backstage. It was a sad sight. Mrs Chow & the teachers conforted them. Words can't explain the emotions that were there that night. We still got a trophy though. The team got to take a group photo with Ben and the producers with their trophy.

LITTLE GENIES, YOU DID GREAT! YOU GUYS ARE WINNERS, WINNERS IN THE EYES OF THE JUDGES! YOU DID WELL! TAKE CARE ALIGHT!

^^ ok i'm done. I just had to tell the story from my perspective. Hope it gives you guys an actual insight on what happened. Sorry if its draggy too. If you guys wanna see the Cheque and the Trophys, it is in the General Office.

Blogging to you live from the creepiest corner of the Computer Lab, it's me with the updates!

Ok, I had just to do that. haha! I was intending to blog in the com lab earlier today, but seems like blogger was slow. Back to the topic.

FINALS! Yes, in the earlier post, we mentioned that Westwood is in the FINAL round of It's Showtime! The group, 小精灵 (Little Genie), has been working hard in putting a good final skit for the show. The theme for the finals is WATER. So the skit is something about Water.

I don't wanna mention what exactly is going to happen, but look out for some intresting stuff. The Finals will be telecasted LIVE on Channel 8, this Sunday (1/10/06) @ 7PM. All 8 Teams, 4 schools & 4 public. The two winning teams will then walk away with a cool cheque of $20, 000. Oh ya, there is a $1000 prize for the Best Cheer Team as well.

NJRC!!!!

WOO!

What a intense NJRC it was today. I did not go yesterday, so I cant say anything about yesterday. Those who went, maybe you could tell us about it on the tagboard. =D So on to today, Siddiq & me arrived at the NJRC at around noon. We did not catch what went on in the morning.

The level there was INTENSE as usual. Everyone was cheering on for their own schools on the field. Sadly Westwood did not qualify for the finals of the Mission stages. Westwood, however, did compete in the SUMOBOT & the SPRINT stages. Sadly, we lost too. But a good effort put up by our Westwood Roboticists.

Our cheerleaders were loud! They were seriously loud. This year the cheer team were up against Riverside Sec and East Coast Pri. Know what? Westwood and Riverside cheer teams have been going head to head since the year 2002. Though both schools are eyeing on the Best Cheer Team Award, we are good friends. Hahahaha! Riverside won the Best Mascot and Best Cheer. Kudos to them!

Oh ya! Did I mention that some of the Cheerleaders went on stage and grooved to the We're All In This Together - one of the High School Musical song and Buttons by Pussycat Dolls. Woah were they good! =D

Onto the Semi-Finals we come! As posted on June 20, our first group - Little Genie (小精灵) was voted into the Semi-Finals. The team went for the recording of the show on Friday, 18 Aug and WE BLEW THE COMPETITION AWAY! We were OUTSTANDING! Effects, story and music. I won't reveal much but look out for the effects. We got a IMPRESSIVE score of 28.0 from the judges! So, please please please please please please vote for our school's team! Get them into the FINALS!

The Secondary 3 team is on this Tuesday, 22/8/2006, on Channel 8, 8pm. Do support them by voting.

Westwood Carnival '06

Here's the update on the school's biggest event of the year which was held last week, Westwood Carnival 2006. I guess it should be called Westwood Bazaar 2006 instead of Carnival cause we sold loads of good goods ! Anyway, let's get back to what the topic is supposed to be.

We started the heat up for the whole event by having our Guest of Honour, Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West Community Development Council(CDC) and our current principal, Mrs Betty Chow to declare the carnival open (: And oh, did i mention that our former principal,Ms Kok came back? Yeah she did ! Plus, the atmosphere was great and was filled with excitement.

Afterwords, the Westwood Idol began. Woohoo! We had the Solo item up first with a few contestants singing a song of their choice.To get into the finals, they had to depend on how many votes they receive from both supporters and their fans. And the top three finalists were Jacklyn(Sec3), Farhana(SEc2) and Indra(Sec1). They really deserve to be in the finale. They've got the voice, especially Farhana. Indra and Jacklyn sang S Club 7's Never Had aDream Come True while Farhana, Hero by Mariah Carey(: And here's the results:

Indra came in third position
Farhana came in second .. &
Jacklyn, FIRST !

But that's not all, we still had Superband and Supergrooves.
The criteria for each band to get into the finals are the same as the Weswood Idol.
So as for the Superband, the top three bands that were in the finals were,
FatJunior(Sec5s), My Size is Small(Sec4s) and Rebel Alliance(Ex Westwoodians).
They all played well I'd say(: and the results

Fat Junior - came in First (congrats)
My Size is Small - Second ... and
Rebel Alliance - third (:

And for Supergrooves, the girls could really dance huh ^.^
The criteria for Supergrooves is a little bit different though. They(3 groups) were already in the top three choosen to be in the finale (:

So the group that came in first was Remix Duo, second was Solitary Soulz and the third one was from a group of Sec2s (sorry, i couldnt remember their group name)

Oh, we also have to thank the emcees, I CUBE PROJECTS and our very own AVA crew for making the event a loud one (:

We had other entertainments for visitors. Some major ones were like the Arcade(sponsored by a parent of a Sec1 student), the dunking machine,Haunted House, done by Sec 3B, Badge making Booth managed by MS TanWK, some Sec2s and ex westwoodians and we had the Street Soccer and Disco also managed by a group of Ex Westwoodians.

Other than that, we had many other stalls like smaller game booths and loads of food stalls. My favourite was a food stall by a Sec2 class. They sold cute little strawberries dipped in chocolate.
The @-Link stall sold a few goods as well as helium balloons ! Also, thank the Parent Support Group for setting up stalls. I think i saw some clothes being hanged for sale ^.^

Not forgetting the Techno Science Fair which was held in the school hall for our Primary School friends (: They had their Lego Robotics Competition and also exhibit some science experiments. How cool!

To round up the whole event, Indra sang My Baby You. Awwww...

And, let's all thank the organising commitee for making the whole event a successful one.And of course, all Westwoodians too (:

The Secondary 2 team is on tonight, 11/7/2006, on Channel 8, 8pm. Do
support them by voting.

Their group name is called 七龙珠 (Seven Dragons) and their performance theme is 以卵击石.

***Final Update: Ang Mo Kio & Kranji Sec went through the next round. But 七龙珠 (Seven Dragons) don't be discouraged, it was a close fight between these two schools. Great effort by them!
